A Chance Encounter in Antwerp: The Art of Larsen Bervoets. Street Photography| bCLPhoto

While strolling through the streets of Antwerp, I came across a curious mural of a face spread across two adjacent buildings. I couldn't resist taking a few photos. Upon further investigation, I discovered that its creator is Larsen Bervoets, who designed the piece for the Flemish Center for Sexual Health in Antwerp.

What struck me most was how the mural changes completely depending on where you stand. From the corner, the two walls merge into a single face — something you'd completely miss if you were walking fast. That's what I love about street photography: slowing down enough to actually see.

Double Take: Finding Art Between Two Walls

Larsen Bervoets (b. 1979, Antwerp) is a multidisciplinary and experimental artist. Throughout his career, he has created numerous indoor and outdoor murals, worked on canvas and panels, and fabricated his own sculptures, installations, and furniture.

He has produced artworks on rooftops and walls in many European cities, including Chemnitz, Rotterdam, and Gothenburg. In Gothenburg, he painted a piece covering nearly 2,000 square meters on the abandoned rooftop parking lot of a shopping center.

I am always struck by how certain artists can turn a simple road into an emotional experience for the viewer. There is a world of difference between this intentional storytelling and the mindless graffiti that simply occupies space on a wall.

As Bervoets himself states, "Residents of densely populated cities yearn for public places to meet each other. By applying colors, lines, and shadows to such places, you create extra space and provide visitors with food for thought."
